Abstract:
Charles Clermont-Ganneau has stayed three times in Jerusalem. One of his stays was a mission for the British foundation the Palestine Exploration Fund, the other two were made as part of his diplomatic career. The period was that of the beginnings of the archaeological activity, led by the English and focused on the Temple Mount/Haram es-Sherif. His exploration of the city was very fruitful and led to some important epigraphic discoveries including the famous Temple Stele. He also conducted in-depth surveys such as those of the Tomb of Joseph of Arimathea or the escarpment and rock chambers of the Ecce Homo. The search for the burial place of the kings of Judah was his major project and excavations were carried out in the Ophel at his request. They revealed, if not the royal tombs, then the traces of a 1st century synagogue.
