Abstract:
In April 1944 the German occupying forces in Hungary distributed a questionnaire among the Jewish communities, demanding an assessment of their properties, funds, foundations, and the aggregate property taxes paid by the community members in the fiscal year 1943-44. 740 communities responded, among them 460 which are in the present-day borders of Hungary. 106 of the latter submitted data about the property tax and its base. These data are used in order to calculate the real value of unclaimed Jewish real estate in Hungary; states that it amounts to 222,888,000 pengo.
