Abstract:
Surveys the history of antisemitic stereotypes in the art and literature of France, such as the figures of Judas and the Wandering Jew. Discusses caricatures of the Jew as peddler, usurer, and traitor - incapable of internalizing French cultural values. Interprets the cartoons by Caran d'Ache and Jean-Louis Forain, founders of the newspaper "Psst...!, " dedicated to the portrayal of the Jew during the early years of the Dreyfus Affair. Considers these images as examples of mythical figures used for xenophobic purposes within a cultural, religious, and political framework with which the French public could identify.
