Abstract:
Analyzes the disputations at Barcelona in 1263 and at Majorca in 1286, focusing on the people, places, and arguments involved. The Barcelona disputation was a major event, held in the palace of Jaime I. Two leading theological figures, Nahmanides and Pablo Christiani, argued about basic theology - whether the Messiah was human and whether he had come. Christiani used a new tactic, trying to prove the "truth" of Christianity by using biblical and talmudic texts. Nahmanides' arguments became classic Jewish responses to Christianity. In contrast, the participants in the Majorca disputation were a Christian merchant named Inghetto Contardo and several unknown Jews. The disputes were spontaneous, held over a period of several months in various places, including the marketplace and the port. Many issues were discussed, and Contardo always won the arguments; he even convinced one of the Jews to convert. Unlike the Hebrew account of the Barcelona disputation, written by Nahmanides himself, the Majorca text is anonymous and is partially based on recordings of earlier disputations. However, it is probably typical of the many spontaneous disputations which must have taken place at the time.
