Abstract:
Ischa Meijer (1943-1995) survived the Holocaust together with his mother in Westerbork, and then in Bergen-Belsen. Later on in his life, as a journalist, among other topics he wrote about relationships between Jews and non-Jews. Focuses here on two issues about which Meijer was very critical: Paul Verhoeven’s film "De soldaat van Oranje" (1977), in which the Jews are depicted as caricatures of a stereotype; and Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s play "Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod" (1987). Meijer stated that the evil done in wartime Holland did not only come from outside but also from inside the country; he claimed that the majority of the Dutch people were antisemites. He also noted that, after the war, the Dutch government decided not to assist Jews returning from the camps nor those who had been in hiding. It was only in recent years that this policy changed.
