Abstract:
Criticizes A. Pereswetoff-Morath's "A Grin without a Cat; Vol. 1: 'Adversus Iudaeos' Texts in the Literature of Medieval Russia (988-1504)" (2002). Argues that Pereswetoff-Morath denies that there was a Jewish presence on Russian soil in the Middle Ages, and therefore he deduces that the "Adversus Iudaeos" texts which circulated in Russia did not reflect polemics with actual Jews. Nor did the heresy of Judaizers have any connection with real Jews. Ioffe maintains that there were Jews in the Russian realm throughout the Middle Ages. Pp. 603-650 contain Pereswetoff-Morath's response (in English) to his critics, "'Simulacra of Hatred': On the Occasion of a Historiographical Essay by Mr. Dennis Eoffe [sic]", in which he reiterates the main theses of his book and repeats that attempts to consider the "Adversus Iudaeos" texts that circulated in Russia as testimony to real polemics with Jews or as proof of a Jewish presence in Russia are groundless. Contends that Ioffe's reaction is motivated not by scientific considerations, but by political ones, because "A Grin without a Cat" rejects the antiquity of Russian ethnic antisemitism.
