Abstract: When working as a country doctor in Czarist Russia, the Jewish author and poet Saul Tschernichowsky (1875-1943) had close contact with the rural population and with the Jews living there. Meeting the village folk and peasants brought back memories of his own childhood spent in the country that made him realize the discrepancy between "yesterday's world" and modern times. Academic medicine did not count for much in the country. The peasants wanted "proper" drugs, by which they meant drugs whose strong smell and conspicuous colour suggested effectiveness. Some of Tschernichowsky's medical experiences from that time have found their way into his literary oeuvre, for instance into the stories "be-inyan ha-mumchim" (Concerning experts) and "ze'adim rishonim" (First steps), and particularly also into his idyll "Berele chole" (Berele is sick), composed in 1907, which is an attempt at making this literary genre also fruitful for Modern Hebrew Literature. Analysis of its content reveals that the historiographic inference that Jewish and non-Jewish religious-magic medicine overlap and influence each other is congruent with Tschernichowsky's

Abstract: This chapter surveys biblical laws relevant to social power and the distribution of resources and addresses challenges of assessing the legislation and finding potential for the application of its principles within the modern world. The goal of social justice in biblical law is not to overturn the existing social order but to preserve pre-existing privileges of individuals within their respective socioeconomic statuses. Thus, laws protect and aid persons who are socially, legally, and/or economically vulnerable (e.g. poor, widows, fatherless, and resident aliens), and remedy problems of those who are already suffering from loss of their status (e.g. debt slaves). Biblical law fosters a society in which people enjoy fair representation and have access to resources with which to independently support themselves. Social justice is based on ethical values that must be taught, encouraged, and accepted as part of the collective world view; it is not enough to legislate and enforce them.

Abstract: There were two primary and distinct channels through which Muslim scholars received the text of the Bible, and both can be observed, with some variations, from a very early stage onward, continuing into the contemporary period.In their attempt to employ biblical material for polemical purposes, Muslim scholars were interested in passages that purportedly predicted the advent of Islam and the Prophet Muḥammad. Abstract: The last two centuries have seen a growing focus on matters concerned with the natural environment. This is not only true for the natural sciences, but allfields of inquiry, including that of theology and religion. Building on the work of eco-theologians and scholars of eco-hermeneutics, this article aims to determine whether, and to what extent, translation has a role to play in promoting these efforts. Consequently, usingEco's (2004) notion of "translation as negotiation" as blueprint, the author first delineates what an eco-conscious translation entails before showing its practical application in Jonah 3:1-10. In the end, such a rendering does not diverge too much from the Hebrew text or other more established English translations. However, the changes it introduces are ideologically significant. Moreover, the process may prove to be an important tool if the Judeo-Christian tradition still has a role to play in battling different environmental challenges.

Abstract: The conversation in John 4 between the Samaritan woman and Jesus on the correct place of worship is here followed back into earlier texts from both sides, Samaritan and Jewish texts. The commandment to build an altar on Mount Gerizim was added to the Samaritan Pentateuch around the turn of the era or slightly later. It has precedents in the inscriptions from the second century bce found on Mount Gerizim. In the Pentateuch, the ‘centralization command’ in Deuteronomy does not include a specific location, but comes in two different versions: “the place that the Lord will choose”, MT, and “the place that the Lord has chosen”, SP. Each version entails a location: Jerusalem or Mount Gerizim. That the place was Jerusalem is said in Nehemiah and many other Hebrew Bible books. The Samaritans made their understanding clear in the inscriptions on Mount Gerizim and in the tenth commandment of the Decalogue. The ‘centralization command’ corrected the altar law in Exodus 20 by limiting worship to one place only, and the SP also corrected the altar law’s wording to the same effect. All this is ancient thinking, different from ours. But it also is an ancient way of identity formation.

Abstract: The Dead Sea Scrolls have provided radical correction to scholarly views of the Samaritan Pentateuch (SP). Jewish scriptural scrolls such as 4QpaleoExodm and 4QNumb displayed surprising resemblance to major expansions in the SP. 4QPent B and 4QPent C contained individual variants in common with the SP but also Samaritan-like major expansions beyond the SP. There were three editions of the Pentateuch - the Old Greek, the “pre-MT,” and the “pre-SP” - circulating and shared in Judah from the mid-third century bce up to the dawn of the Christian era. Rather than a specifically “Samaritan Pentateuch,” there was a shared Jewish-Samaritan Pentateuch alongside the MT edition. Moreover, 4QJosha most likely narrated the building of the first altar in the newly-entered land immediately at Gilgal, rather than on Mount Gerizim or Mount Ebal in the north. Text-critical analysis as well as logic suggests that Gilgal was the original setting of the altar, that the secondary movement to Mount Gerizim was endorsed by Judeans as well as Samarians, and that Mount Ebal was a subsequent anti-Samaritan change in the MT.

Abstract: In recent decades, a lively debate on the Hebrew and Greek versions of Esther story has developed, focusing on their text-historical and theological relationship. The discussion is enriched further by taking into account the Old Latin Esther, fully edited some 10 years ago by Jean-Claude Haelewyck as part of the Beuron Vetus Latina series. The extant Latin text likely dates back to 330–50 CE and represents an older, now-lost Greek Vorlage. Its numerous peculiarities substantially widen our understanding of ancient Esther traditions. The English translation presented here aims to elicit a broader interest in the Old Latin Esther and to facilitate a fresh discussion of its significance.

Abstract: Attached to the end of the book and separated from the foregoing text by introductory phrases, the additions in Old Greek Job 42,17a.b-e function as a final interpretation of the book, claiming authority by referring to other writings that were considered authoritative (namely, Genesis 36 LXX). By foretelling Job's resurrection from the dead and identifying him as a descendant of Abraham, the supplements help to disambiguate equivocal passages in the book concerning resurrection and Job's piety. Situated at the edge of canonization, 42,17a.b-e constitute a liminal phenomenon between interpretative textual growth and reception history.

Abstract: Adoniram Judson's life and work have long been the subject of popular and scholarly interest, but the intellectual and exegetical background for his Burmese Bible translation has not been closely studied. This background was the biblical studies movement in New England, which began in the early nineteenth century and flourished before declining and eventually disappearing by about 1870. The opposing New England orthodox Calvinist and liberal Unitarian schools were equally involved in the movement. Judson was an early product of Andover Theological Seminary, the center for orthodox Calvinism in New England. From 1816 to 1840 Judson translated the Bible into Burmese and his references to the scholarly works he used, along with the text-critical and interpretive decisions in his Bible translation, identify him as an ongoing participant in the New England biblical studies movement. This scholarly background helps us understand interpretive decisions in the Judson Bible, which is still the main Burmese version used by Protestants in Myanmar.

Abstract: As recent research in the study of manuscripts has demonstrated, variations in the phrasing of a text not only reveal scribal error or play but also indicate how changes to a given passage in different manuscripts convey important interpretive traditions. In this article, I explore one such case in TgJon to Isa. 10:32. First, I examine how key features (or the lack thereof) in the biblical text of Isa. 10:32 led to certain lines of rabbinic interpretation as found in b. Sanh. 95b, which contains a midrashic story based on the biblical text. Second, I analyse a parallel account of this story as found in TgJon to Isa. 10:32, and I argue that a particular manuscript of this Targum (B. M. 2211) contains added layers of anti-Roman rhetoric through an allusion to Abraham and Nimrod. In this fashion, the variation in wording in this manuscript is indicative of a distinct interpretation from that found in the Talmud.

Abstract: This article challenges the assumption that insofar as the Jewish communities of Babylonia were a "people of the book", their book was a" Hebrew" Bible. Functionally the Bible that most people would have known was the Aramaic Targum of Onqelos and Jonathan. The Bible's content-its law, narrative, and prophecy-was culturally mediated through Aramaic. Even in Rabbinic communities, where some had competence in Hebrew that gave them ready access to the original, the lack of formal and systematic study of Miqra may have made the Targum the tradition of first resort for understanding the Hebrew. The situation in the Aramaic-speaking east may not, then, have been all that different from the west, where a Greek Bible shaped the religious identity of the Greek-speaking Jewish communities. This essay is offered as a contribution to the neglected study of the role of Bible translation in the history of Judaism.

Abstract: For a long time the apocryphal "Ladder of Jacob" was accessible only in arbitrarily selected translations. Without a critical edition and a comprehensive study of the whole textual segment, scholars were unable to evaluate its significance for Early Jewish and Christian literature. Since 2015/17, with the publication of a new critical edition and German translation (accompanied by a detailed introduction, footnote commentaries and appendices with related texts), a new approach to this important but hitherto widely unknown text has been made possible. This approach verifies the different layers or strata in the text, which are: a supposed Jewish apocalypse (mid-second century), a Christian expansion of the angels speech in light of the "praeparatio evangelica" tradition (fourth-seventh centuries), a Jewish mystical prayer (eleventh century) and the incorporation of this narrative block into the "Tolkovaja Paleja" together with a series of exegetical commentaries (end of the thirteenth century). In the light of the new approach, it can be said that the "Ladder of Jacob" is most of all an outstanding example of mutual relations between Jewish and Christian theology.

Abstract: The systematic rendering of inline graphic by παιδεύω and παιδεία in the Septuagint allowed a merging of the divine correction as found in Deut 8:5 or Prov 3:12 with the classical meaning of παιδεία, "education" or "culture." Such merging occurred later than is usually assumed but can be detected in 2 Maccabees, Psalms of Solomon, and Wisdom of Solomon. This phenomenon is the witness to the construction of a specific Jewish identity during the late Hellenistic and early Roman period.

Abstract: The Additions to Daniel 3 fill the narrative gap of the Hebrew and Aramaic text with worship as if in a heavenly temple, offering a perspective over the entire cosmos. The Song of the Three in particular draws the whole created realm into this architecture, reminiscent of the heavenly journeys of the apocalypses. Comparison with parallels from the Enoch literature and liturgical texts from Qumran suggests a purpose behind the Daniel scribes' adaptation of these literary materials. Through their apocalyptic borrowings, the Additions to Daniel 3 assert the full sanctity of the Hasmonean temple and thus also provide a script for the later reception of this text in church consecrations.
