Abstract:
Hebrew chronicles of the 17th century describe the massacre in Nemirov of Jews who had been captured by the Cossacks, after efforts made by fellow Jews to buy their freedom had failed. A Polish source, the diary of Boguslav Maskiewicz, mentions a group of Jews who saved their lives by taking a loyalty oath to the Cossacks and then retreating with the Polish forces which had briefly recaptured the town. These Jews may be the same ones mentioned in the Hebrew chronicles. Presents English translations of two of the chronicles here.
