Abstract:
Deals with the issue of collective guilt, or who was responsible for implementing the Final Solution. Presents the views of three persons: Adolf Eichmann, who stated that his superiors, and ultimately Hitler, were responsible; Günter Grass, who said that all Germans were responsible, whether guilty of commission or of omission; and Karl Jaspers, who defined four categories - criminal guilt, political guilt, moral guilt, and metaphysical guilt. Concludes that the notion of collective guilt can justifiably be applied to the German people, qualified by the different kinds of guilt described by Jaspers.
