Abstract: The book aims at bringing a significant contribution to the study of a prestigious figure of the French 17th century who, thanks to his intellectual achievements, became involved with the leading politicians of the time, including Cardinal Richelieu and the future Louis XIV. Unlike the previous critical studies about La Mothe Le Vayer, the book does not study exclusively the works in which he seemed to undermine the political order, but also takes into account the series of educational treatises that he wrote for the prince between 1640-1658. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, which involves philosophical and literary concepts, the book is likely to deal with a question that could not be more relevant nowadays: should an intellectual who perceives the failings of the political order withdraw into the solitude of his library or get involved in politics in order to try to improve it?

Abstract: "Between 1941 and 1945, thousands of German Jews, in fear for their lives, made the choice to flee their impending deportations and live submerged in the shadows of the Nazi capital. Drawing on a wealth of archival evidence and interviews with survivors, this book reconstructs the daily lives of Jews who stayed in Berlin during the war years. Contrary to the received wisdom that "hidden" Jews stayed in attics and cellars and had minimal contact with the outside world, the author reveals a cohort of remarkable individuals who were constantly on the move and actively fought to ensure their own survival."--

Kein Staat will ihnen Zuflucht gewähren.

Abstract: "Calendars map time, shaping and delineating our experience of it. While the challenges to tracking Jewish conceptions of time during the Holocaust were substantial, Alan Rosen reveals that many took great risks to mark time within that vast upheaval. Rosen inventories and organizes Jewish calendars according to the wartime settings in which they were produced--from Jewish communities to ghettos and concentration camps. The calendars he considers reorient views of Jewish circumstances during the war and show how Jews were committed to fashioning traditional guides to daily life, even in the most extreme conditions. In a separate chapter, moreover, he elucidates how Holocaust-era diaries sometimes served as surrogate Jewish calendars. All in all, Rosen presents a revised idea of time, continuity, the sacred and the mundane, the ordinary and the extraordinary even when death and destruction were the order of the day. Rosen's focus on the Jewish calendar--the ultimate symbol of continuity, as weekday follows weekday and Sabbath follows Sabbath--sheds new light on how Jews maintained connections to their way of conceiving time even within the cauldron of the Holocaust."--Publisher description

Abstract: The Mystery of Skepticism: New Explorations represents the cutting-edge of research on underexplored skeptical challenges, dimensions of the skeptical problematic, and responses to various kinds of skepticism. The thirteen newly commissioned essays, edited by Kevin McCain and Ted Poston, demonstrate that despite its long history philosophical reflection on skepticism and the challenges it poses is alive and well. The essays in The Mystery of Skepticism enhance our understanding of skepticism by breathing new life into old debates and sparking new ones. The Mystery of Skepticism will shape discussions of skepticism for years to come

Abstract: What was it like to be a practitioner of Pyrrhonist skepticism? This important volume brings together for the first time a selection of Richard Bett's essays on ancient Pyrrhonism, allowing readers a better understanding of the key aspects of this school of thought. The volume examines Pyrrhonism's manner of self-presentation, including its methods of writing, its desire to show how special it is, and its use of humor; it considers Pyrrhonism's argumentative procedures regarding specific topics, such as signs, space, or the Modes; and it explores what it meant in practice to live as a Pyrrhonist, including the kind of ethical outlook which Pyrrhonism might allow and, in general, the character of a skeptical life - and how far these might strike us as feasible or desirable. It also shows how Pyrrhonism often raises questions that matter to us today, both in our everyday lives and in our philosophical reflection

Abstract: "This book confronts the threats of epistemic relativism and Pyrrhonian scepticism to analytic philosophy. Epistemic relativists reject absolute notions of knowledge and justification, while sceptics claim that knowledge and justification of any kind are unattainable. If either of these views is correct, then there can be no objective basis for thinking that one set of methods does a better job of delivering accurate information than any other set of methods. Philosophers have generally sought to resist these threats by responding to the argument that seems to motivate both positions: the Agrippan trilemma. Steven Bland argues that this is a mistaken strategy. He surveys the most influential responses to the Agrippan trilemma, and shows that none of them succeeds in undermining epistemic relativism. Bland also offers a new, dialectical strategy of challenging epistemic relativism by uncovering how epistemic methods depend on one another for their applications. By means of this novel analysis, the book concludes that there are principled reasons to prefer naturalistic to non-naturalistic methods, even if these reasons do little to ease the threat of scepticism"--Back cover

Abstract: "Radical Skepticism and the Shadow of Doubt brings something new to epistemology both in content and style. At the outset we are asked to imagine a person named Vatol who grows up in a world containing numerous people who are brains-in-vats and who hallucinate their entire lives. Would Vatol have reason to doubt whether he himself is in contact with reality? If he does have reason to doubt, would he doubt, or is it impossible for a person to have such doubts? And how do we ourselves compare to Vatol? After reflection, can we plausibly claim that Vatol has reason to doubt, but we don't? These are the questions that provide the novel framework for the debates in this book. Topics that are treated here in significantly new ways include: the view that we ought to doubt only when we philosophize; epistemological "dogmatism"; and connections between radical doubt and "having a self." The book adopts the innovative form of a "dialogue/play." The three characters, who are Talmud students as well as philosophers, hardly limit themselves to pure philosophy, but regale each other with Talmudic allusions, reminiscences, jokes, and insults. For them the possibility of doubt emerges as an existential problem with potentially deep emotional significance. Setting complex arguments about radical skepticism within entertaining dialogue, this book can be recommended for both beginners and specialists."--Bloomsbury Publishing

Abstract: "Based on original sources, this important new book on the Holocaust explores regional variations in civilians' attitudes and behavior toward the Jewish population in Romania and the occupied Soviet Union. Gentiles' willingness to assist Jews was greater in lands that had been under Soviet administration during the inter-war period, while gentiles' willingness to harm Jews occurred more in lands that had been under Romanian administration during the same period. While acknowledging the disasters of Communist rule in the 1920s and 1930s, this work shows the effectiveness of Soviet nationalities policy in the official suppression of antisemitism. This book offers a corrective to the widespread consensus that homogenizes gentile responses throughout Eastern Europe, instead demonstrating that what states did in the interwar period mattered; relations between social groups were not fixed and destined to repeat themselves, but rather fluid and susceptible to change over time"--

Abstract: Skepticism: From Antiquity to the Present' is an authoritative and up-to-date survey of the entire history of skepticism. Divided chronologically into ancient, medieval, renaissance, modern and contemporary periods and featuring 50 specially-commissioned chapters from leading philosophers, this comprehensive volume is the first of its kind. By exploring each of the distinct traditions and providing expert insights, this extensive reference work: - covers major thinkers such as Cicero, Descartes, Hume, Spinoza and Wittgenstein - acknowledges the influence of ancient skeptical traditions on later philosophy and explains why it is still a fertile topic of inquiry among today's philosophers and historians of philosophy - analyses various forms of skepticism including Pyrrhonian, religious, ethical and Neo-Pyrrhonian - addresses issues in contemporary epistemology and indicates new directions of study Skepticism, a driving force in the history of philosophy, remains at the centre of debates in ethics, philosophy of religion, epistemology and the philosophy of mind

Abstract: "Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust surveys the history of the Holocaust whilst demonstrating the pivotal importance of the historical tradition of anti-Semitism and the power of discriminatory language in relation to the Nazi-led persecution of the Jews. The book examines varieties of anti-Semitism that have existed throughout history, from religious anti-Semitism in the ancient Roman Empire to the racial anti-Semitism of political anti-Semites in Germany and Austria in the late 19th century. Beth A. Griech-Polelle analyzes the tropes, imagery, legends, myths and stereotypes about Jews that have surfaced at these various points in time. Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust considers how this language helped to engender an innate distrust, dislike and even hatred of the Jews in 20th-century Europe. She explores the shattering impact of the First World War and the rise of Weimar Germany, Hitler's rhetoric and the first phase of Nazi anti-Semitism before illustrating how ghettos, SS Einsatzgruppen killing squads, death camps and death marches were used to drive this anti-Semitic feeling towards genocide. With a wealth of primary source material, including primary source excerpt boxes, a thorough engagement with significant Holocaust scholarship and numerous illustrations, reading lists and a glossary to provide further support, this is a vital book for any student of the Holocaust keen to know more about the language of hate which fuelled it. Abstract: English translation by Vernon Mosheim of Alton, Ruth : Deportiert von den Nazis. Seattle, Washington, 1961. ME 9
Abstract: The memoirs begin with the family's deportation from their Berlin apartment on the evening of October 27th, 1941. They were taken to the Lewetzowstrasse synagogue and from there deported to the ghetto of Lodz (Litzmannstadt). Ruth's husband Julius (Ulli) was assigned the position of a transport supervisor, which granted them a small space to themselves. The memoir describes the living conditions, illnesses and deaths in the ghetto. She also recalls religious celebrations and cultural activities. The mass deportation of Jews from Lodz in September 1942 is described. Ruth's son Michael was exampted due to her husband's interventions. Ruth's mother, who was with them in the ghetto, died in 1943. In 1944 the famly was deported to Auschwitz and Stutthof. The living conditions of these camps are described. Ruth was transported to a work camp in Dresden, and was in the city during its destruction in February 1945. After the destruction of the city Ruth was transferred to a series of concentration camps, finally escaping on a death march. She was liberated by American soldiers in May 1945. In 1946 she was reunited with her son Michael, who had survived the Stutthof concentration camp.

Abstract: "Scott Yenor argues that David Hume's reputation as a skeptic is greatly exaggerated. In David Hume's Humanity, Yenor shows how Hume's skepticism is a moment leading Hume to defend a philosophy that is grounded in the inescapable assumptions of common life. Humane virtues reflect the proper reaction to the complex mixture of human faculties that define the human condition. These gentle virtues best find their home in the modern commercial republic, of which England is the leading example. Hume's defense of both common life philosophy and humanity are, however, flawed by his secretly dogmatic assumptions about the nature of history and his Enlightened approach to religious teachings and psychology. This study makes the case for Hume's manner of grounding philosophy in common life is essential to any reinvigoration of the humanities. It ultimately holds that Hume's practice of that philosophy is seriously flawed, but that a more philosophic philosophy of common life is available"--

Abstract: The memoir was written in German one and a half years after liberation. It has the form of a witness report, written in a clear and objective tone, but nevertheless harrowing. The content: Their is no word on their life in Amsterdam before the deportation. The memoir starts with their arrest in Amsterdam, Westerbork - the place they were deported to at first - is mentioned, but not described. Bergen-Belsen gets more attention, Fritz Joseph describes daily work routine, and living conditions in the camp. Theresienstadt comes next, and the author points out the good features as opposed to his later experiences in Auschwitz. He describes the efforts to make Theresienstadt look prettier, before the International Red Cross delegation arrived. Soon thereafter, the infamous movie documentary about Thersienstadt was shot. Firtz Joseph describes many details of the false set-up. Then he was separated from his wife and deported to Auschwitz. He describes the selection process, and many other components of the horror. He was then transferred to Buchenwald, and had to work as a forced laborer at the HASAG works (former Hugo Schneider AG) at Meuselwitz near Leipzig. In 1945, the camp was evacuated and Fritz Joseph could flee. The war ended and he got treatment for his infected leg. After a few days he could return to Amsterdam where he met his wife - she had survived as well. A 10 page long It can be found in the file as well.
Abstract: Also included is an English language summary of the memoir by John and Eva Englander (2005).

Abstract: The memoir was written 1946 in Austria, shortly after her liberation. Minna recalls her deportation in February 1942. She was taken to Riga together with her parents and her husband. Her mother was killed upon their arrival. Her father and her husband were taken to Salaspils for forced labor, where the later perished. Minna, who was pregnant with her first child, was forced to undergo an abortion. She describes her experiences of Nazi sadism in the Ghetto of Riga, especially by the Ghetto commanders Krause and Roschmann. In 1943 Minna was taken for peat cutting labor to Olaine. In November 1943 Minna and her father were reunited at the concentration camp Kaiserwald near Riga. From there both were taken to Spilve - a labor camp at a German air base, which was under worse conditions than the first camp. They worked in the cold without appropriate shoes and in thin clothes. Due to the exhausting conditions Minna's father Wilhelm was getting weaker and eventually was deported to Auschwitz in April 1944. Minna was taken to Stutthof, which was overcrowded and in primitive conditions. They were taken to an exterior labor camp, where they had to build trenches for the German defense in the rain and cold. They suffered of constant hunger. In January 1945 the camp was dissolved and all sick and disabled were killed. They were marched under exhausting conditions in the snow and cold. For all missing women ten others were chosen randomly to be killed. After a week Minna was finally too exhausted to continue walking and stayed behind. The guard who was supposed to kill her fired the bullet over her head and left her for dead in the snow. She was rescued and brought to a house, where she was given food and a place to sleep. She was discovered by a German police officer, who was about to shoot her along with other Jewish fugitives. Minna was saved by her Viennese accent, which convinced him that she was a gentile woman.
Abstract: She was taken to a mobile army hospital and treated for her frozen feet. In March 1945 Minna was liberated in Lauenburg, Prussia, where she was sent by German hospitals as an unidentified Jewish patient.

The memoir starts with a short history of Jewish life in Bohemia where John Reese's family comes from, then moves on to detailed descriptions of the lives of family members, sometimes enriched by personal anecdotes. In the second half John Reese turns to his close family, his family hop business, childhood memories from Bohemia, and his education. In 1938 his family escaped to North America, he started a new life and took part in World War II. The memoir follows roughly a chronological order.

Abstract: The memoirs were written shortly after World War II in the United States and were translated by the author's son Frank Bamberger in 1978. The history of the family is traced back to the 19th century. The memoir continues with a discussion of the fate of the extended family during the Holocaust. Elisabeth Bamberger reflects on German Jewry and their blindness towards the dangers of the rising Nazi movement. Some pre-1933 Nazi political actions are described. Elisabeth's husband Heinrich was a member of the Centralverein and became active in attracting foreign countries to the sad happenings in Germany. The memoir recounts daily life under the Nazi regime and numerous "spontaneous actions" by the police and the SS, including the anti-Jewish boycotts. Other features of life under Nazism which Elisabeth describes in her memoir include Nazis among former acquaintances and employees, experiences of denunciations, and the fear of house searches. The memoir also describes some Jewish responses to the persecution, such as the performances of the Juedische Kulturbund. Heinrich’s health worsened and he died in the 1930’s. The Bambergers' children were sent to boarding school abroad. Their son, Willi, eventually emigrated to Ecuador, while their daughter Friedel went to Rome and from there to England. Another son, Franz, immigrated to the United States in 1938. The recollections continue with the Kristallnacht of 1938, the beginning of the war, and the growing threats and rumors revolving around the idea of deportation. Plans to leave on a ship from Genoa to South America in 1940 were canceled due to Italy's entrance in the war. Elisabeth Bamberger finally managed to emigrate via Russia and Japan to Ecuador. These experiences are recorded in a separate memoir (ME 28).
