Abstract:
Chronicles the polemics in the Piedmontese and French press on the Mortara affair, interpreting the opponents' motives as more political than humanitarian. Cavour and Napoleon III saw in the affair an opportunity to win world public opinion for the Piedmontese cause against the temporal powers of the Vatican, and inspired articles on it in the liberal and anti-papist press. Worried Vatican diplomats mobilized the Catholic press. When Napoleon III saw that he might lose Catholic support at home, he stopped the press campaign. Pp. 13-17 contain correspondence of Vatican officials and emissaries on the need to counter hostile publicity.
