Abstract:
The children of Villa Emma left few tangible traces of their passage:their escape required light baggage. Unexpectedly, however, the only objects they owned, which surprisingly reappeared and were donated to theVilla Emma Foundation, are books. In the early 2000’s, ninety-six volumes, mostly in German, were found in the library of Jewish children whocrossed Europe under pressure from Nazism. Books meant a lot to them:cultural formation, leisure from the context of war and persecution, horizon of future. What role can books play in the future “place for memory”of this story?
