Kurzfassung:
States that the power of the Catholic Church in Argentina grew significantly after 1934, and analyzes its influence on public opinion in the context of the Evian Conference in July 1938. The Catholic stance, as reflected in the Catholic press of the time, rejected both Nazism and Judaism as non-Christian. The official Catholic newspaper "El Pueblo" stressed economic problems and high unemployment as an argument against Jewish immigration. The more conservative "Los Principios" of Córdoba warned against the Jewish-communist danger. The militant "Criterio", published by Msgr. Gustavo Franceschi, vaunted anti-Jewish accusations (e.g. the Jews are unassimilable, disloyal) and played the nationalist-patriotic card, claiming the right of Argentina to defend itself against Jewish immigration, which was, in fact, halted on 28 July 1938.
