    Abstract: "How did exiled musicians from Germany and Austria, who reached safety at Kitchener Camp in Britain, find themselves in an Australian internment camp in New South Wales in 1940? What were the institutions that helped Jewish refugee musicians survive in wartime Shanghai? What happened to Austrian musicians who were trapped in the Netherlands after the German occupation?     Abstract: "Sara Levy nâee Itzig (1761-1854), a salonniáere, skilled performing musician, and active participant in enlightened Prussian Jewish society, played a powerful role in shaping the dynamic cultural world of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Berlin. A patron and collector of music, she studied harpsichord with Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-84) and commissioned musical compositions from both Friedemann and his brother Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-88). Archival evidence demonstrates Levy's position as an essential link in the transmission of the music of their father, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), and as a catalyst for the "Bach revival" of the early nineteenth century, which was led by her great-nephew Felix Mendelssohn.     Abstract: With National Socialism's arrival in Germany in 1933, Jews dominated music more than virtually any other sector, making it the most important cultural front in the Nazi fight for German identity. This groundbreaking book looks at the Jewish composers and musicians banned by the Third Reich and the consequences for music throughout the rest of the twentieth century. Because Jewish musicians and composers were, by 1933, the principal conveyors of Germany's historic traditions and the ideals of German culture, the isolation, exile and persecution of Jewish musicians by the Nazis became an act of musical self-mutilation. Michael Haas looks at the actual contribution of Jewish composers in Germany and Austria before 1933, at their increasingly precarious position in Nazi Europe, their forced emigration before and during the war, their ambivalent relationships with their countries of refuge, such as Britain and the United States and their contributions within the radically changed post-war music environment. -- Jacket

Les salles de concerts et les studios radiophoniques et d’enregistrement se remettent à fonctionner. Dans ce contexte, nombre d’interprètes et de compositeurs français bénéficient de conditions de travail inédites, profitant de l’absence de concurrence étrangère conjuguée à la mise à l’écart des œuvres des compositeurs, morts ou vivants, exclus par les lois scélérates. Centré sur la musique savante, cet ouvrage collectif traite de la diffusion de la musique, grâce à des études sur quelques sociétés de concerts spécifiques à cette période, sur des œuvres du répertoire, sur la création contemporaine et sur le rôle de certains interprètes. Il met en évidence les personnalités de Francis Poulenc, Olivier Messiaen et Arthur Honegger ainsi que d’Alfred Cortot, Germaine Lubin, Charles Munch et Wilhelm Kempff, en insistant sur les ambiguïtés entretenues rétroactivement par certains acteurs de la vie musicale sur leur carrière pendant les années noires. Il analyse également la manière dont quelques grandes figures du passé (Mozart, Berlioz, Wagner) sont susceptibles de s’inscrire dans un discours de propagande, largement véhiculé par les critiques et les musicologues. Cette réflexion sur la trace mémorielle d’une époque se clôt par l’évocation de deux débats récents, qui montrent que ce passé passe difficilement.
