Abstract:
Refers to the exchange between Martin Broszat and Saul Friedländer, published in "Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte" (1988) on the historicization of Nazism. Discusses this polemic in the context of the "historians' debate" and the trend to relativize the dimensions and uniqueness of the Holocaust. States, however, that Broszat's arguments did not imply such a minimalization, nor an ethical and political reevaluation of Hitler's regime and its crimes. In this connection, mentions Benedetto Croce's distinction between Italian fascism and Nazism, and his opinion that, unlike fascism, the evil produced by Nazism can be explained by German history.
