Abstract:
Based on an assumption that the future chance of antisemitism becoming a political factor in Hungary depends on social elites (i.e. on intellectuals), analyzes results of a sociological survey held in December 1992 among 1,000 university students in Hungary. The respondents were classified in five groups: four of them range from "non-antisemites" to "extreme antisemites", and a small group of "doctrinaire liberals". Shows that the level of the respondent's antisemitism depends on his/her family background, his/her level of religiosity, and the place of his/her profession in the prestige-hierarchy. The level also correlates with level of xenophobia or liberalism. Distinguishes several types of antisemitic attitudes (theological, Jewish conspiracy, Shylock stereotype, Jewish-Bolshevik stereotype, and "anti-Zionism"). Analyzes the degree of latency of antisemitism; in particular, to what extent the respondents who gave antisemitic answers regard these answers as antisemitic. The results show that the "antisemitic core" among students is small; the "resistant group" comprises only 20% of the respondents.
