Abstract: Discusses the debate among Hungarian historians provoked by Randolph Braham’s "The Politics of Genocide; the Holocaust in Hungary", published in the U.S. in 1981 and translated into Hungarian only seven years later. Focuses on several aspects of the debate: whether the Holocaust of Hungarian Jews could have been avoided, the singularity of the fate of Hungarian Jews, and the question of responsibility for the Holocaust in Hungary. Braham’s main critic in Hungary was historian György Ránki, himself an assimilated Jew. Notes that Ránki’s opinion on German or Hungarian responsibility for the Holocaust would change according to the audience he was addressing. Diverse views concerning responsibility affected the relations between Jews and non-Jews in Hungary in the 1980s. Discusses, also, the views of William McCagg, István Deák, and other Hungarian historians.

Abstract: After 1867, Hungarian Jews willingly assimilated through conversion and mixed marriage, becoming part of the new bourgeoisie who were opposed by the Hungarian gentry. At the turn of the century, Jewish democrats and communists struggled against feudal strains and moderate antisemitism in Hungarian society. Following World War I, Hungary was dominated by a Christian nationalistic and antisemitic ideology which opposed Jewish assimilation and led to the the first anti-Jewish laws enacted in 20th century Europe. After the mass exterminations in Auschwitz, and postwar emigration, only the most assimilated Jews remained. Many were prey to Stalinist repressions and to popular hatred of communists. States that the Hungarian people never assumed responsibility for their part in the Holocaust, blaming the German or Hungarian authorities of that time.
