Abstract: Discusses results of surveys conducted in 1995 and 2002, which showed that the percentage of antisemites in the adult Hungarian population did not rise during that seven year period, but that the reasons for antisemitism had changed from anomie to ideological-political ones.

Keywords: Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) Influence ; Antisemitism History 1945- ; Antisemitism Public opinion ; Holocaust denial ; Jews Persecutions 20th century ; History
Abstract: Examines results of a survey conducted in March 1995 in Hungary based on interviews with 1,500 people, carried out by the Gallup/Hungary Public Opinion Research Institute. The survey aimed to examine the breadth, strength, content, and variety of antisemitic prejudice in Hungary and to determine what Hungarians felt about the Holocaust and their responsibility for the persecution of Jews during World War II. The questions were grouped in three clusters: "Holocaust denial", "acceptance of responsibility", and "legitimization of forgetting". Results show that Holocaust denial arises from the lower strata of the social hierarchy; responsibility for persecution is rejected by certain urban groups stemming from families of high social status; and forgetting is supported by groups of low social status. Contends that in Hungary Holocaust denial is not a form of symbolic expression of antisemitism, as it is in the West; it stems mainly from a uniquely Eastern European development of historical knowledge and information. Pp. 64-68 contain tables showing correlation of the responses with age, sex, education, social status, antisemitism, etc.

    Language: English

    Angaben zur Quelle: 5,3 (1996) 1-74
Keywords: Antisemitism History 1945- ; Antisemitism Public opinion ; College students
Abstract: Based on an assumption that the future chance of antisemitism becoming a political factor in Hungary depends on social elites (i.e. on intellectuals), analyzes results of a sociological survey held in December 1992 among 1,000 university students in Hungary. The respondents were classified in five groups: four of them range from "non-antisemites" to "extreme antisemites", and a small group of "doctrinaire liberals". Shows that the level of the respondent's antisemitism depends on his/her family background, his/her level of religiosity, and the place of his/her profession in the prestige-hierarchy. The level also correlates with level of xenophobia or liberalism. Distinguishes several types of antisemitic attitudes (theological, Jewish conspiracy, Shylock stereotype, Jewish-Bolshevik stereotype, and "anti-Zionism"). Analyzes the degree of latency of antisemitism; in particular, to what extent the respondents who gave antisemitic answers regard these answers as antisemitic. The results show that the "antisemitic core" among students is small; the "resistant group" comprises only 20% of the respondents.

    Angaben zur Quelle: 69,1 (2002) 179-194
Keywords: Antisemitism History 1945- ; Antisemitism Public opinion
Abstract: Based on results of a survey conducted in 1995, discusses latent antisemitism in Hungary. Considers factors that affected whether respondents thought it risky to express anti-Jewish opinions. Concludes that left-wing and right-wing antisemites deal differently with their anti-Jewish feelings. The former tend to conceal their views, while the latter express them. For leftist antisemites, antisemitism is not considered politically correct. Antisemitism functions as a code that distinguishes between political-cultural camps and establishes public political and cultural identity. Pp. 195-199 contain a response by Nils Muižnieks, focusing on public, rather than private, manifestations of antisemitism. He states that latent prejudice can be activated and become mobilized into the public sphere. Praises Kovács for providing tools to measure such eruptions of prejudice.
