Kurzfassung:
Opinion polls conducted in Romania since the early 1990s show that anti-Jewish prejudices are strong, albeit less than anti-Gypsy sentiments. Social distance (according to the Bogardus scale) with Jews is the second greatest after that of Gypsies. Stereotypical images of Jews are numerous. Anywhere from 50% to 72% of respondents in the different polls are not conscious that Romania, together with Germany and other countries, was an arena of the Holocaust. There are forces in Romania which can transform moods into political action. The forms of political antisemitism produced by these groups vary from expounding nostalgic antisemitism, through "mercantile" and utilitarian antisemitism, to reactive antisemitism, explained, in particular, in terms of "competitive martyrology" between the Holocaust and the Gulag. None of these groups up to now has been able to organize a parliamentary faction comparable with the Jobbik party in Hungary.
