Abstract:
Relates the activities of Rufeisen (1922-1999) who, while posing as an Aryan, rescued Jews and non-Jews in the area of Mir, Belarus. After the Nazi invasion of the USSR, he was arrested but managed to flee. Reinhold Hein, a German police chief in the area of Mir, employed him as a translator. Information overheard by Rufeisen regarding the impending liquidation of the ghetto was conveyed to partisans in the area and helped in the escape of several hundred Jews from the ghetto who fled to the forests. After his denunciation, he fled to a convent in Mir, where he converted to Catholicism. He became a Carmelite monk and immigrated later to Israel. Pp. 136-147 present translation of letters written by Rufeisen between 1944-57 to his brother in Israel and extracts from his diary in which he relates to his wartime experiences and their impact on his conversion to Catholicism.
