Abstract:
Numerous Conversos settled in Brazil in the Colonial period. One reason for this was the wish of Portuguese authorities to cleanse their land of suspected Judaizers and at the same time to promote the colonization of Brazil. Another reason was the feeling of the Conversos themselves that they would be safer in Brazil from persecution by the Inquisition. Argues that life within a persecuting society, which the Spanish and Portuguese Empires were, caused the Conversos to have divided personalities. While they were Catholics and loyal to the Portuguese Crown, many of them preserved some form of Jewish consciousness.
