Abstract:
To demonstrate Christian belief in the stereotype of Jews as hagglers and usurers, quotes from German literature of the 18th-19th centuries. While Christian literature depicted the Jews as profiting from the population's economic misery, Jewish autobiographies reflect the struggle of the Jewish population to make a living, and their business dealings as a means of survival. Asserts that Christians themselves were involved in usury, mentioning, for example, that Goethe's grandfather, a tailor in the Frankfurt region, handled financial transactions. This negative image of the Jew created many false legends, some of which are still popular in Germany.
