Abstract:
Views "Die Judenbuche" as a profoundly anti-Semitic text, both overtly and covertly. Contends that Droste-Hülshoff expressed her antisemitism partly via her use of stereotypes. She used rhetoric to promote a political agenda, warning about the influx of "Jewish" blood into Christian families. She was disturbed by the problem of unclarified identity and the danger posed by the influx of Jews into Christian society made possible by emancipation (her work appeared during the second phase of this process in Germany) and the resulting assimilation of some Jews. Her work implies that it is a crime to be a Jew and that Jews are guilty of deicide; it was very popular in the 1870s, when modern political antisemitism arose.
