Abstract:
Looking back at a debate with the Polish writer Andrzej Szczypiorski (appeared in "Kultura", November 1979), Scharf states that he still agrees with what he wrote then. In seeking the source of anti-Polish stereotypes found amongst Jews, he concludes that such generalizations about Polish antisemites had a basis in reality: there were antisemitic Polish political parties; there was anti-Jewish discrimination in Poland, although it was hardly comparable to the persecution in Germany; the Catholics, led by the Pope, did not try to defend the Jews during the Holocaust; and a significant number of Poles blackmailed Jews and/or betrayed them to the Nazis. There was also a lack of identification with Jewish suffering, both during and after the Holocaust. However, Scharf wonders what Jews would have done if the situation had been reversed.
