Abstract:
After the publication of Jan Gross's "Neighbors" in 2000, an urgent need for "cleansing the memory" emerged in the Jedwabne community. However, a project of collective reckoning with the past failed, and local residents refused to participate in a reconciliation ceremony, attended by President Kwaśniewski, held in the town in 2001. Blames the failure of the memory project on interference from the "outside": the national debate on the Jedwabne massacre; the involvement of politicians, among them rightist and antisemitic ones, in the debate; the subordination of the commemoration to Poland's "raison d'état"; and some mistakes made by authorities, e.g. that the decision on the new inscription at the Jedwabne memorial was made before the historians could complete their investigation on the involvement of the Germans in the massacre and on the actual number of victims. Pp. 179-194 contain a response by Sławomir Kapralski, "The Jedwabne Village Green? The Memory and Counter-Memory of the Crime". He argues that the residents' mythological narratives of the crime are far from genuine remembrance, which he advises should be undertaken through the interaction of various perspectives; no standpoint is privileged a priori. Pp. 195-196 present Wolentarska-Ochman's reply to the criticism.
