Abstract:
This chapter applies a Disney princess mythology to depictions of Esther in biblical fiction. Five novels from female Christian authors are discussed to reveal how the popularity of the Disney princess franchise impacts the ways the authors impart values to the biblical story of Esther. The fictional accounts diverge from the Bible by creating an older female antagonist who attempts to thwart Esther’s happiness and determine that the Queen of Persia lives “happily ever after.” To contrast with the Christian sources that romanticize her marriage, the chapter concludes with popular ways Jewish communities engage Esther in light of Purim festivities and celebrations of Jewish survival.
