Abstract:
Scholars' interpretations of Luther's anti-Jewish writings have ranged from dismissing them as products of his old age and senility to rejecting them outright. Advocates examination of the tracts in their historical context. Argues that Luther's attacks on the Jews were not aberrations, but part of his apocalyptic world view of the continual struggle between the "true" and "false" Church. Luther believed that all his opponents - whether Catholics, Jews, or "fanatics" - were blasphemers against God, a risk to the community and, thus, deserved whatever attacks were made upon them. Suggests that Luther's target was not the Jews themselves but rabbinic exegesis.
