Abstract:
Goldhagen's "Hitler's Willing Executioners" has stirred controversy in the USA and in Germany. Dwells briefly on the most important problems discussed in the debates. The book was received supportively by the press in the USA, but not by scholars, both in the USA and in Germany. The discussion was expanded when it was taken up on the Internet and when a German translation of the book appeared. The reception of the book by the Americans and by the Germans was not very different; but there was a wide gap between its reception by historians and non-historians. Examines what caused the popular acceptance of the book in the USA and Germany; contends that in the latter country it was the conflict between generations. States that the book also had a positive impact on the German public consciousness.
