Abstract:
Relates an episode from the history of the Soviet liberal literary journal "Novyi Mir." In 1961, after the journal published Ehrenburg's memoirs, "People, Years, Life", the editors received an antisemitic letter signed by one Nadezhda Gedeonova. Gedeonova, a philologist from Leningrad, blamed Ehrenburg that in writing about Nazi Germany he paid attention only to Nazi antisemitism, and she hinted that Jews control cultural life in the USSR. Tvardovskii, the editor in chief of "Novyi Mir", who was never an admirer of Ehrenburg's belle-lettres, responded to Gedeonova, criticizing her views. The texts of the letters are given here.
