Abstract:
Though Polish commentators during and after the Holocaust portrayed the Polish Jews' welcome for the Soviet invasion of Eastern Poland as betrayal, argues that hostility to Poland was not a major motivation. The Jews, many of whom were refugees from the German invasion, were well aware of the Nazis' brutality. Many had also suffered at the hands of Poles (and other ethnic groups) during the administrative chaos. On its arrival, the Red Army often prevented such pogroms. The Soviet authorities agreed to evacuate Jews afraid to remain where they were. It is no surprise that many Jews warmly welcomed the Red Army, particularly as its modern equipment and disciplined behavior gave the impression that it was a powerful and dependable force coming to Poland's aid. Even those who had much to fear from Soviet rule welcomed the invasion as a fate better than death under the Nazis.
