Abstract:
Discusses the life and activities of Rabbi Silver, a leader in the American Reform movement. Inter alia, notes that he strongly advocated an international boycott of German goods in the 1930s, although he had been sympathetic toward Germany after World War I and he viewed Nazism as a passing phenomenon. After the "Kristallnacht" pogrom he became a bit more pessimistic about the fate of German Jews, but continued to view his anti-Nazi activities as a general struggle against totalitarianism. During the war, Silver briefly attempted to change U.S. immigration policy; however, realizing the futility of these efforts, he then concentrated on Zionist activities.
