Abstract: A paper delivered at a study day held on 9 November 1986. Discusses four models for the explanation of prejudice: psychological, which explains prejudice through internal psychic conflicts; cognitive, which views prejudice and stereotyping as derived from observation and thought processes; group-theoretical, claiming that prejudice arises from competition and conflict situations between groups; social-cultural, the spread of prejudice through social and cultural learning. States that these models may also be used to explain antisemitism. Mentions the function of psychological "projection" in pornographic "Stürmer"-type antisemitism and in medieval England, where antisemitism retained its influence even after the expulsion in 1290.
