Abstract: This paper examines the attitude toward aggadah that comes to the fore in Ramban's commentary on the Torah. Two parallel considerations seem to have guided him: hermeneutical and educational concerns. Ramban's esteem for aggadah compelled him to wage a defense for it in response to those who mocked or opposed certain aspects of midrash integrated in rabbinic teachings. This attitude is integrated in various places in his commentary on the Torah, yet Ramban did not consider himself obligated to interpret verses of the Torah consistently in light of aggadic sources. At the same time, Ramban expressed awareness that the purpose and goal of aggadah was not necessarily to interpret biblical verses according to their plain, immediate meaning, but rather to shed light on some aspect of the Torah's eternal truth. He does not dwell on the underlying ideological significance of the sources from rabbinic literature that he cites, as his textual focus is the biblical text. To that extent, the midrashic material that Ramban integrates in his commentary serves to resolve textual difficulties or to reinforce his readings. Where Rashi cites a midrash that, in Ramban's view, contradicts some aspect of the text or of reality, he points this out – not to negate its relevance but to show that it does not correspond to his own hermeneutical aims.
