Abstract:
In September 1942 members of the 4th Company, 4th Panzer Group Signal Regiment murdered 30-40 Jews near the town of Peregruznoye, 80 km southwest of Stalingrad, Russia. The murder was an initiative of the company's commander, Fritz Fischer; only a minority of the company's men participated. Argues that the responses of the soldiers to the orders or appeals to participate was far from uniform. The perpetrators can be ranged, according to their reactions, from two kinds of initiative-takers, through compliers, to various kinds of non-compliers. Their reactions were determined by complicated inter-relations among themselves, not simply by peer pressure or ideology. In 1964 Fischer and another participant in the murder were brought to trial in Düsseldorf; both were acquitted.
