Abstract:
Notes that Luther originally defended the Jews and criticized the Catholic Church for its anti-Judaism. In response, Catholic critics attacked him for his pro-Jewish attitude and even alleged that he was of Jewish origin. His translation of the Bible was based on the Hebrew original and helped spur both Christian Hebraism and popular interest in the biblical text. He even wrote several defenses of the Jews. However, when the Jews failed to convert, he turned against them with invective, concerned about their potential to Judaize Christianity and their failure to accept the truth of his religion. He even mistrusted converted Jews. Luther advocated punishing the Jews, socially and economically, and expressed his preference that they leave Germany. Singer hails the 1998 Guidelines of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for repudiating Luther's anti-Judaism.
