Abstract:
Analyzes Eichmann's concept of his role in the Holocaust, mainly based on the interviews conducted with him by the journalist (and former Nazi) Willem Sassen in Argentina between 1956-60. In contrast to Eichmann's later declarations, made while he was in prison in Israel and at his trial, he boasted to Sassen that he was not an idiot ("Trottel") who merely carried out orders; he thought all along while receiving the orders, and he was an idealist. He claimed that others obstructed his actions, and that he himself was not harsh enough, so that the goal of the extermination of ten million "enemies" was not met. Comments that however we judge Eichmann's personality and motives, the fact remains that he was knowingly responsible for the deportation of millions of Jews to their deaths.
