Abstract:
Describes talks held between the Budapest Rescue Committee and the SS in 1944, as a result of which thousands of Hungarian Jews were saved from deportation to Auschwitz. 1,685 Jews were taken to Bergen-Belsen on the so-called Kasztner train and were kept in a special section of the camp. For $100 per capita, Eichmann agreed to deport 30,000 Hungarian Jews to Austria for forced labor. However, only 15,000 Jews were deported to the Vienna area for a wide range of work. The families could stay together, children above 12 also worked. Includes charts with data about the prisoners, their camps, types of work, employers, and the time period of forced labor, according to geographical area. Forced laborers were taken to the Gau Niederdonau and Gau Steiermark areas. Residence camps were guarded by the SS and were similar to concentration camps in terms of maltreatment. Starvation, brutal punishments, and lack of adequate health care were responsible for the loss of human lives. Out of the 15,000 Hungarian Jews deported, 2,500 died.
