Abstract:
Discusses the views and experiences of Jewish women in the Kraków ghetto. Most of the women opposed resistance; they realized that the Nazi war was not like other wars, and that they would have to concentrate on the struggle for survival. Women were able to cope better than men with the feeling of helplessness and they adjusted more easily to the worsening conditions. They smuggled food, bribed officials, dealt in the black market, found hiding places, and organized cultural and welfare activities. Maintains that general Israeli condemnation of the weak Jewish "diaspora mentality" is unwarranted, especially since millions of non-Jewish victims of the Nazis were never criticized for failing to offer resistance. While there were some women who fought in the ghetto resistance, the passive resistance of many women who struggled to save their families and friends is just as praiseworthy.
