Abstract:
Attempts to clarify what the Vatican, and Pope Pius XII, knew or did not know regarding the Nazi plan to exterminate the Jews. Based on Vatican documents and the diary of the British envoy to the Vatican, Francis D'Arcy Osborne claims that the Vatican (specifically the Secretary of State, Cardinal Maglione, and the Pope) did not have a network of informants, and knew no more than did the Western powers. When information began to come in about atrocities and mass executions, at first it was not believed and later it was decided to keep to the policy of silence. Chadwick faults the Pope for remaining silent.
