Abstract:
Describes efforts made to convert the Jews beginning in the 1240s-50s, initiated by the friars and supported by the Crown, involving missionary preaching, formal disputations, and secular legislation. Contends that these efforts largely failed - conversions occurred due to social, political or legal pressures, but not due to religious conviction. Mass conversions occurred after the riots of 1391, and the Inquisition achieved the assimilation of ca. 80% of the Jewish population up to 1492; when the remaining Jews were exiled. Pp. 146-148 deal with missionizing among the remaining Muslims in the 16th century.
