Abstract:
Examines reactions of the Herut Party in Israel during the various stages of the "Kasztner trial" (1954-58), which began when the Attorney General sued Malkiel Gruenwald for libel after he charged that Kasztner had collaborated with the Nazis during the German occupation of Hungary. Discusses the influence of this case on ideological and political issues on Herut's agenda, such as accusations raised by Revisionist Zionists against the World Zionist movement's conduct during the Holocaust. Based mainly on reports published in "Herut", the party's newspaper, and the arguments presented in the court by Shmuel Tamir (Gruenwald's defense attorney), who was one of the founders of Herut.
