Abstract:
Emphasizes the importance of remembering in Jewish tradition as an element that differentiates between Jewish and German historiography. Distinguishes three stages in public consciousness of the Holocaust and its teaching in the schools in Israel. Until about 1960, it was ignored. After the Eichmann trial, which left an indelible impression on every Israeli, it was integrated in the ideologies of the various parties and exploited for their purposes. But lately it has been the subject for detailed research, which gives a much more complex picture. Scholarly books on the Holocaust are widely read. Whereas young schoolchildren learn about the Holocaust experientially, secondary schools present a multifaceted historical approach. Notes that in Israel the emphasis is on remembering the victims, not, as in Germany, the perpetrators.
