Abstract: Examines the scientific validity of Nolte's analysis of Nazi antisemitism in his book "Der europäische Bürgerkrieg 1917-1945" (1987). Discusses the evidence for and against Nolte's allegations on such issues as Hitler's identification of Jews with Bolsheviks; the antisemitism of the Left; Nazi restraint in carrying out economic measures against Jews; Nazi cooperation with Zionists; partial justification for deportations and for massacres committed by Einsatzgruppen; his claim that historians who deny the Holocaust are not to be rejected out of hand; and his implications that the scale of mass murder was overestimated by other historians of whom "the overwhelming majority" are Jewish. Shows that Nolte uses sources selectively and uncritically, ignores research of the last twenty years, presents controversial theses as facts, and does not differentiate between historical presentation and value judgments. Concludes that much of Nolte's work is unscientific, although this does not invalidate the historicist approach per se, which is necessary for understanding the Holocaust.
