Abstract:
Analyzes 78 paintings and drawings by children in Theresienstadt, mainly from the collection of the State Jewish Museum of Prague, exhibited in 1967 in New York. The major themes identifiable in the children's art works are a preoccupation with food, intense feelings of claustrophobia, a desire to be free and return to one's former life, a sense of the fragility of one's physical existence, and a lack of regard for the lives of the camp inmates. There is no evidence of serious mental illness or aggression, perhaps because these did not have survival value.
