Abstract: Discusses the situation of the Jewish community in Iraq after 1945 and the motives of the Iraqi government in passing legislation in 1950 to enable the Jews to emigrate, despite the economic disruption involved. By means of the law, they intended to rid the country of an inflammatory element and control the outflow of capital. The authorities were taken by surprise when almost all of Iraqi Jewry chose to emigrate. The government had intended to guarantee the rights of the Jewish establishment and to counter criticism by radical nationalist circles who were demanding expulsion of the Jews and expropriation of their property.
