Abstract:
Selon l'Ancien Testament, la circoncision est un signe, gravé dans la chair, de l'alliance entre Dieu, Abraham et sa descendance. Les musulmans la pratiquent en se référant aussi à Abraham mais sans que cette tradition ne soit inscrite dans le Coran. Dans le monde chrétien, on a célébré la circoncision du Christ pendant des siècles, à la date du 1er Janvier. La mention " circoncision " figurait dans tous les calendriers français jusqu'en 1961. Aujourd'hui la circoncision est pratiquée surtout par les Musulmans, par les Juifs mais également, par la majorité des hommes aux Etat Unis. Le film n'explore pas la dimension religieuse de la circoncision : les hommes et les femmes qui s'expriment ne sont pas pratiquants. Cependant la circoncision est pour eux source de questionnement. Leurs interrogations tournent autour de cette marque sur le corps, mais aussi autour de la filiation, de l'héritage culturel, de la transmission. Cette question se pose de façon plus aiguë chez des couples dits mixtes, pour qui la décision de circoncire ou de ne pas circoncire peut provoquer des émotions intenses pouvant aller jusqu'au conflit.
Abstract:
According to the Old Testament, circumcision is a sign, engraved in man's flesh, of the covenant between God, Abraham and his descendants. Muslims also carry out circumcision in reference to Abraham, but this tradition is not written in the Koran. Throughout the Christian world circumcision has been celebrated for centuries on January 1st. The term "circumcision" appeared in all French calendars until 1961. Nowadays circumcision is mainly practiced by Muslims and Jews, but the majority of men in the USA are also circumcised. This film doesn't explore the religious dimensions of circumcision; the men and women expressing their views here are not religious. However, for them circumcision remains a major issue. Their questions focus upon this marking of the body, but also upon lineage, cultural heritage and its transmission. These are particularly sensitive issues for mixed couples, for whom the decision of whether to circumcise or not can give rise to powerful emotions, sometimes leading to conflict.
