Kurzfassung:
Analyzes results of a sociological survey conducted by the All-Russian Center for the Survey of Public Opinion in October 1997, commissioned by the Russian Jewish Congress. Notes that a great majority of the respondents were neutral in regard to Jews, as they were toward many other ethnic minorities. Antisemites and philosemites constitute ca. 10% each. Supporters of the radical right and of conservative communists show a higher propensity to antisemitism, but beyond this there is no correlation between political views or religious affiliation and attitudes toward Jews. Contends that antisemitism has an instrumental role for Russian groups: it expresses their fear of competition, their wish to suppress everything troublesome in their ethnic consciousness, anti-intellectualism, etc. Most anti-Jewish stereotypes are traditional, but some new ones have arisen, mainly the view of the Jew as alien to the national community. Most of the respondents did not want a Jew holding a high position in the state, army, and state security, but they were opposed to discrimination against Jews in all other spheres.
