Abstract:
Describes the existence of Jewish communities in Swiss Savoy in the 14th century; Jews settled there after the expulsion from France in 1306. Their communities were supported by the local rulers, the House of Savoy. Focuses on events related to the crisis which began in 1347 - the period of the Black Death in Europe - when the Jews were accused of poisoning the wells. Deals with the role of the local power in this period, which apparently tried to defend the Jews against the rage of the populace, but in fact practiced measures of persecution: e.g. arrests, confiscations, executions. Some of the small Savoy Jewish communities were completely destroyed in this period (e.g. Villeneuve, Saint-Maurice, Monthey).
