Abstract:
Abū ʿAlī Muḥammad b. Ḫallād al-Baṣrī¹ was a distinguished disciple of the Muʿtazilite theologian Abū Hāšim al-Ǧubbāʾī (d. 321/933). While the dates of his birth and death are unknown, the sources state that he did not reach an advanced age (lam yabluġ ḥadd al-šayḫūḫa).² Ibn Ḫallād’s students included Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī al-Baṣrī (d. 367/978) and Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm b. ʿAyyāš, both of whom in turn were teachers of Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Ǧabbār (d. 415/1025), who later became the head of the Basran school of the Muʿtazila and is arguably the most influential representative of this movement.
