Abstract:
Analyzes the documentary film (same name as the title) by American director and producer Deborah Lefkowitz, released in 1990. Lefkowitz presents the opinions, feelings, and recollections of 11 Jewish and 44 non-Jewish residents of a city in the Ruhr Valley. The interviewees are not shown; their comments, translated into English, appear as subtitles printed over scenes of the city. Contends that the diverse opinions defy any conclusive generalizations about "what Germans think" on the topics of Jews and German history. The juxtapositions of comments, silences, and images point to the ambivalences that inform notions of selfhood, otherness, and the struggle to come to terms with the past.
